If you’ve just started your website and creating a blogging plan, try to avoid these things. If you’ve already established a blogging plan for your business, take a look at these five things and evaluate if you’re doing them.
These things are not the end of the world but if blogging is a way for you to meet new potential clients and nurture existing relationships, you really want to do everything you can for your audience. So, here are the 5 these to stop doing on your blog today.
1. Don’t write about yourself.
This is your blog, but it’s not about you. No one wants to know about you (at first). Unless you’re already famous, very few people will be interested.
Most people are generally only interested in what’s in it for them. My coach told me many years ago, that everyone tunes into the WIIFM (what’s in it for me) Station. People are looking for value and if they see you’re providing them with something of value, they’ll give you their attention.
To do this, you have to know what your audience or clients value, and you have to write, record videos, podcasts (or another method of communication) to directly address those values.
This is not about you. It’s about them.
The sooner you identify what they want and start creating content to support your audience’s needs, the better off your blog (and your business) will be.
Just remember, it’s never really about you and it’s ALWAYS about your audience.
2. Say NO to instant pop-ups.
Pop-ups are those annoying windows that literally pop-up when you visit a website. They generally want you to enter your email or sign-up to get something free or they give a substantial discount.
Don’t get me wrong, you want to have pop-ups. They’re awesome for you because people interested in your content, services, or product will join your network. It’s also great for your audience because these same people will get to experience you. They’ll get something free (or reduced) and wonderful that you’re offering them and they’ll get exposed to your fresh perspective and unique product/service.

The thing is, no one wants to see a pop-up instantly—as soon as they land on a website. It’s annoying and it deters people from actually engaging with you.
So, keep the pop-up but give your visitor at least a few seconds to engage with your content before you bombard them with pop-ups. If they like your content, you may notice more people subscribe to your blog—even without the instant pop-up.
3. Don’t sell
No one likes a door-to-door salesman. If you feel like you’re selling, you’re selling.
Give people amazingly wonderful free content and allow them to fall in love with you and your brand. If people like what they see, you won’t have to sell anything.
People will eagerly snatch up whatever you have to offer, but you have to build a reputation as a contributor and someone willing to support others on their journey. Humility and a genuine desire to serve will take you far in business (and in life).

Take it from someone who’s done the sales thing. Don’t sell. Seek rather to serve and earn trust. From that place, the sales will come.
4. Everything is not a fire.
Along with the advice to stop selling, tuck in your back pocket that everything is not a fire.
Yes, in sales we’re taught to give people a deadline and that some huge percentage (possibly 75%) of your revenue will come right before you end a promotion.
But we’re talking about people here. Just because you may not be getting the number of sales (or as markets call it, conversions) that you’d like, does not mean that you need to ramp up the anxiety and make it seem imperative that people do something.
So when people say, “everything must go.” OR
“This is your final opportunity.”
“You only have 4 hours to change your life.” That was a real headline in my email.
It’s all malarkey. There is NO fire, and I encourage you to stop creating pretend fires to make people buy stuff. If there are only 4 hours left until a sale ends, find a creative way to market the end of your sale without creating a pretend fire.
No one wants to feel rushed, pushed, or pressured. And while that tactic may get you a few extra sales, it may also alienate a segment of your audience who may now never buy from you.
Be authentic. Don’t create drama for personal gain.
5. Don’t be a flake.
As a website owner, don’t be a flake on your blog. Be consistent. Publish
Publish regularly. Email and engage your audience. Reply to comments on your blog.
Don’t just disappear. Websites are no longer static. They’re updated constantly. The Google Machine likes websites that are dynamic and constantly updated. So all companies, from the big mammoth companies to your company’s website update their content at least monthly—sometimes daily.
They blog. Keep your blog updated.
You want Google to like your blog and Google will start to notice you as you publish more and more (quality) content.
So don’t be a flake. Don’t settle for just having a website. If you have a website, try to make it the best little website you can. Keep it updated and correspond with the people who express interest.
Having any type of platform is a way to promote yourself, but you have to remember the old saying, “you catch more bees with honey.”
While having your blog or website may be a tool to help you create income and a lifestyle for yourself and your family, it’s really not about you. Your ability to be of service, to offer sound advice, and to create products that your audience wants and actually needs are the only way to create a win-win. You earn money and your audience gets the value it seeks.
